Subject: RE: TMJ …..or jaw lock

De Forest, WI

LRB - 10/14/2022 10:29 Wife can only open mouth about one half inch. Has saw four different doctors, three m.r.i one Ct scan , two rounds of physical therapy. Now home therapy. A doctor now making a thing to wear, he thinks jaw muscle holding jaw movement. She fell on cheek about two years ago, Not a hard fall, no bruising, did bend her glasses. Didn’t notice problem till about one years ago. What to do? 77 years old.

Does she grind her teeth or clench her jaw when she is sleeping?  This can seriously irritate your jaw muscles and cause symptoms of TMJ.  Many people do NOT know that they do this unless their spouse, child, parent, etc. notice them doing it when they sleep.

The simple fix is to wear a mouth guard that prevents the teeth grinding and the clenching.  This problem can become self induced.  You worry about it, it causes stress, this causes jaw clenching when sleeping, rinse and repeat.  Break the cycle and it resolves.

Not the sole cause, but something to look into.  Watch her when she is sleeping.  Does she grind her teeth or clench her jaw when asleep?
