A few general comments about cabinets:
1. You have to go pretty far down-market before they will not outlast your tolerance of the style. You'll get tired of looking at them long before they wear out.
2. What you get as you go mid-market and up is mostly choices- not necessarily longevity. More styles, more finishes, more accessories, more sizes.
3. Don't be afraid of particleboard. There's a wide range of quality, and a lot of plywood is really crap these days.
4. Funny how so many NATers will post hatred for Chinese-made machinery parts but will buy Chinese-made cabinets at big-box stores because they're cheap.
5. It's nice to support local businesses, and your neighborhood cabinet shop can do custom sizes, but often styles and finishes are limited unless they buy components from someone else which puts you right back into the same big-box/builder-grade situation.
6. Local shop and builder-grade are made with face frames because "that's how Grandad taught me" and/or they are easier for the workers to install. Is that your priority??? Waste of space and a look that went out in the 70s. There's a reason you can't buy a new car with tail fins and bumper bullets...
7. Finishes on big-box cabinets often vary from one unit to the next.

Bottom line: Buy cabinets for a rental house or a vacation cabin from the big-box store and expect them to be destroyed. Buy cabinets for your own home from a reputable dealer who will help with design/layout and stand behind their products. Lots of sad NAT stories of people who bought appliances from big-box stores and now are battling over service. Same goes for cabinetry.
