Subject: RE: Detached retina

E. Kansas
The repair of a detached retina, in some cases, used to involve placing a scleral buckle on the back side of the eye. Because this buckle had metallic content, the recipient could not undergo an MRI for the rest of their life, as it could displace the buckle, causing extreme eye injury.

I do not know if detached retina surgery still uses a repair method that does not allow MRI (or other procedures), but that is something anyone that has had detached retina surgery needs to verify with their eye doctor and if restrictions apply, all those details should be verified and entered on all of the individual's medical records.

From what I've experienced with detached retina's with family/friends, time is of critical essence in re-attaching the retina. Scar tissue will soon begin forming, making a successful repair potentially more difficult the longer the detachment exists, and can often result in poor vision recovery. A blow to the head or eye can cause retina detachment or tearing, so an immediate and thorough check out by a doctor trained in treating eye issues needs to be done.
