Subject: RE: Gas Logs in fireplace

NW Washington
We installed a gas fireplace insert into a wood-burning fireplace which cost more than expected by the time the opening was changed and new tile was installed.
The fireplace insert is a sealed unit that uses outside air for combustion and vents out through the back wall. It also has a blower to move hot air into the room.
It works fine and puts out a lot of heat, maybe too much heat because the living room soon gets too warm even at the lowest firing rate. It does have a thermostat that can control the temperature. It does not get used much, but it is nice to have as backup heat and it will operate without electric power.
One complaint is that the glass front on the fireplace gets stained up by just the heat of the pilot light and we have not found anything that will remove the stain on the glass. We have tried fireplace and stove cleaners and even Brasso metal polish which someone on NAT recommended and nothing will remove the stain. And a new glass front costs hundreds of dollars.
