Alton, Ia | We'll haul hog manure 5-6 miles quite often. Prefer not too, but it happens. To your question:
Step 1. Analysis. Several samples, especially if part of the pile has been sitting.
Step 2 Comparative fertilizer costs. Usually, "here" we just look at N, P K, maybe S. Then manure is priced at ~~75% of commercial, mainly to account for variability. It actually should be more since you are also getting micronutrients, but again, "here" the people with manure are not demanding it, yet.
Step 3. Do the math. If trucking + application cost of manure < commercial applied cost, keep on trucking it.
Yield doesn't really matter, here anyway. Manure hauling is priced on a $/gallon basis, not a per acre fee. Commercial usually has a per acre app cost, but it's minor compared to the total. They may price 40 bpa ground different though. | |
