Trailer brakes require 12V to “lock up” unless some major mechanical failures have occurred inside.
If your trailer used a 6-way plug, be aware there are two different pin layout standards for them and even more wire color differences.
To make sure it’s right, locate the trailer brake wire via test, and then manually find the trailer brake prong in your female coupler on the truck. Insert the appropriate trailer wire into the matching prong on the male connector.
