I use well calibrated yield data as a guide to production potential, but it may not be my final answer. Unfortunately many people do not collect good yield data. What is your limiting factor to production within an area? Usually moisture and sometimes fertility. If you have a wet salty area that usually produces 0-50 bu corn, it doesn't matter how much seed and fertilizer you put on, it will still probably be 0-50 bu/ac. If you have an area that consistently produces 250 bu/ac, what is its limiting factor? Not enough population or fertility if you are fertilizing and seeding for 200? The only way to really get it right is multi year trials with test strips or blocks and analyze the well calibrated yield data. Trial and error until you figure out what works in each of your fields not the entire farm.
