One of my good friends dad planted a bunch of black walnuts on a hill when we were kids and said if you're lucky you may get to see your grandkids harvest these. Well a few years ago they came down - maybe 6-8" diameter at best? Must have been an insect that killed them. They were looking pretty good until a decade ago. Those are kinda like oaks, multi generational trees. Glad you got to harvest that tree and it didn't end up in a chipper. Now it'll live forever.
