Personally I'd rather have a letter from somebody.  I don't like talking on the phone, especially to somebody wanting something.

If I received a letter with information telling me why they were contacting me, who they were, what they wanted I'd like that much better.  I have no interest in renting to somebody else but if I were renting to an older group who might be retiring I'd keep that letter and phone number.
