I kinda split the difference. I wanted to go to RTK for planting, spraying and harvest but spending $8000 for unlocks and $1800/year in subscriptions just rubbed me the wrong way. It was just dumb luck that the three Raven systems I already had would accept standard NMEA protocol. I started out buying UBlox development boards but they proved not robust enough to be taken out of a lab. They did supply an excellent puck antenna that does well with L1,L2 and tracking signals.
I now run 3 Ardusimple receivers (one base station and two rovers). The Ardusimple guys are developing more solutions and appears to be a favorite of the AgOpenGPS group. I did have to supply a UART to rs232 converter, a stable 5v power supply and a waterproof strain relieved box. The hardware build was straight forward. There was a fair amount of learning configuring the receiver as there's several hundred parameters so it's not really a monkey see monkey do proposition.
