Southern Ohio | I'm a small outfit but I'm not sure that I would pay too much more. I use Y-Tex and write the number on them. It seems by year 5, they're getting tough to read if they haven't been touched up. I have mine through the chute enough with preg checking, etc that I can rewrite or replace if need be so I get where that's not feasible for larger herds or herds that aren't handled as much. I also have a handful that have the engravable Ritchie tags. They are noticeably higher quality but these are probably on year 7 and the color has worn off them to match the engraved color (but you can still see the engraving). Also, I mostly unroll hay and rarely feed out of hay rings so I don't lose many tags. As someone else said, I would probably move toward freeze branding as the next alternative but a lot of that reasoning would be for ease of checking cows during calving season so I could see them better with binoculars instead of driving up close to each individual cow. | |
