To answer your question about the alternator…..
No it won’t work. It’ll run until battery is dead.

As others have pointed out, a relay is necessary. You can feed the relay from the big alternator output wire if that’s convenient, but it needs to be controlled by something else.

I have used an oil pressure switch to control an alternator as mentioned above. Makes an old diesel powered machine that used to have a generator, idiot proof! Use the throttle to kill the engine, oil pressure drops and breaks the excite wire connection to the alternator that would otherwise drain the battery.

You do need a “close on rise” switch not the more common “close on fall” type switch that was used on cars and trucks for turning on the oil pressure light.
