Prepping it is the first step. power wash to remove dirt and loose paint. Depending on condition of old metal, you may have to put either a conditioner/primer. The only paint I have seen applied that stays a long time (30 + years ), is Kynar 500 applied in the factory. Most others last 5 - 10 years. Gotta weigh the costs in time and material. Most just live with it till it is time to replace with new.
