You can put foam over the top of them to help keep from freezing. 2' wide foam is at least as good as another foot deep. the trench doesn't have to be 2' wide, just need to dig the side out a few inches on each side, then stomp that down firm around the pipe, or over the sand around the pipe, put the foam in and be a little careful backfilling the rest. You can also run a stainless steel wire along side the pipe for an improvised heat cable if it ever freezes up.
