Sink is hollow as you know,most with overflow holes drain back into drop tube with smaller slots as it needs integrity to still be able to tighten.This is likely now plastic,they are cheap,remove this drop tube and the grunge causing the smell(will likely be in the hollow portion) will be easy to clean out,had this issue,was caused by a slow draining trap previously.This allows debri to flow into that hollow briefly,,like an ocean tide leaving crap behind.I tried bleach etc,,wont get it.
