A little research it appears ‘corn’ was used back in the 1600s and maybe back before that as any grain with a husk on it, like oats, barley, wheat, etc.
Only in more modern times does it refer to the New World grain growing on a cob......
I can’t get past the paywalls to see the book referenced, tho it is on line (at 290 pages, and reviewed as “informative but incredibly boring”!) But I wonder if he used the term under its old meaning of various food grains?
