I made a lot better return on assets when I borrowed a lot of money in first 3/4 of my farming life. Being proud of no debt is fine but smart debt is what makes operations grow. Prepaying inputs, working carry on grain, improving drainage, having someone else’s money work for you is not a bad thing. So congrats to those that are debt free, but no badge of dishonor to those that borrow.


Well said. Probably the most important part of your statement is "smart debt". Of course EVERYONE that has debt thinks it is smart debt (or they wouldn't have taken it on) but not all debt fits that category in real life.
