Faunsdale, AL | We kept an African Grey for 30 years. They’re not as gregarious as some of the Amazon parrots and Cockatoos I’ve seen. More bonded to a single person or maybe a couple of people. Ours was mostly my bird but accepted my wife though he tended to nip her more or rather she wouldn’t put up with that as much as I did. Then the kids came along and we both had a lot less time to spend with the bird. None of the kids ever made much of a bond. It’s not confidence inspiring when the pet has scratchy claws and a beak it uses like a hand to climb around and that can remove snippets of your flesh quite easily.
Parrots are a lifetime commitment and the bigger ones can live a long time. They’re definitely not a pet that doesn’t require much from you! I guess in a place where the birds are native you could let one go free without much danger to it. | |
