Morris, Mb. | The first one I remember was 1997. I was a teenager then. That was the biggest one on record and caused hundreds of millions of damage. After that, a crazy amount of money was spent flood proofing communities and farms. Since then, we have had 2005, 2009, 2011, spring and fall of 2019 and 2020. 2009 and 1997 were the only ones worse than this year. We do not grow good crops after floods as seeding dates are too late. Unfortunately in Canada we do not have the support programs you do in the states like prevent planting. They pay a small amount for excess moisture but it does not even cover rent payments. So we work to get everything in as crop insurance pays ok if we cut our costs. The biggest issue we will be fighting this year is the crest is so late. It’s two weeks later than normal and we are always up against the seeding deadlines in a “normal” flood. | |
