Subject: Western dryland alfalfa producers

Rome, KS
I am in a situation neither I nor my dad has seen before. Soil moisture was 0 first of the year. In March, received 3 1/2 inches over a 10 day period. That was enough to get the alfalfa started growing. It started going dormant 2 1/2 weeks ago at about 6 inches tall. I harvested 1 field I thought was tall enough but left the rest. It rained 3 1/2 inches over 3 days this last week. It looks like the 2nd cutting is now trying to start. Would you go ahead and harvest the 6 inch tall fields now, or wait and see how much of the 2nd cutting grows knowing, with the weather pattern we are in, it may not rain again for a month or 6 weeks? I am very thankful for the moisture but running around getting 1/3 to 1/2 ton per acre of dry hay isn't really feasible.
