You probably know this, but hardness usually refers to the calcium content, and softness refers to the sodium content. Water softeners usually just add more sodium. Calcium is usually less reactive and alters pH less than sodium, so it's probably the safest for spraying. The biggest complaint with hard water is that it leaves calcium stains behind when you use it for washing, otherwise it's fairly harmless.
