Kettle Moraine, WI
Alfalfa hay as mentioned above brings a more balanced c:n ratio and is a good source of protozoa. The nitrogen will help cycling and your cover crops growth which in turn build rich soil.

Old timer around here cover their garden in fall with alfalfa hay as it insulates the soil to stay warmer a little longer into winter.

Also the old timers would plant like a bushel of oats or wheat on that size plot. Seeded thicker than hair on a dog with no bare ground when couple inches high. Makes nice mat of active roots growing.
