nw oh | We have been feeding Holsteins baby to fat for quite awhile. Saw this cross thing coming so bought 72 cross calves and 72 straight Holstein calves. The cross were half heifer half bull calves. Fed together till 500# then sorted cross and Holstein fed side by side in a slat barn. Fed same ration throughout.
The Holsteins were fed 25 days longer and they both weighed the same. They graded very similar Holsteins yielded about .5% less.
I figured I could pay about $75-$90 per head more for the cross calves versus Holsteins. The other problem I had was I had to jersey cross that never really grew. Should have never been put in. You could tell at about 300# but not 90#. | |
