Texas | A friend of mine has an odd situation and I figured I’d ask here about it.
Fancy Hereford heifer has a calf on a trail road. Calf gets stuck in a deep rut. He finds it cleans it up tubes colostrum. Pens it back with mom in a pen. She takes it all is well.
2 days pass and an older cow prolapsed and died while calving. He pens that calf up with the heifer and calf and goes to get some colostrum for it.
When he comes back they are both nursing the heifer.
So does the second calf still need colostrum?
If he feeds her really well can she feed them both, maybe wean the commercial calf off of her at 60 days?
What are the options here? | |
