W Texas | If I could add one more comment about USDA payments specifically to cattlemen......
Just sold some 70 lb lambs in San Angelo that brought 4.05/lb. Hauled sold some #1 black angus heifers at 670lbs to Roswell for a neighbor and then stayed for the auction....they brought 1.37/lb.
Why do lambs bring so much more than cattle? Very simple: true price discovery in lambs, whereas in cattle the packer cartel has everyone by the short hairs. So the federal government has in essence allowed monopoly practices in beef in exchange for campaign contributions to various politicians and they feel guilty enough to throw a few table scraps at the ranchers. But none of these payments will ever make a cattleman whole for his losses at the market. | |
