East Central MN

I have used the style of rock bucket that the Notch, Virnig, and Prime make. It is flat steel on edge for the "tines" and a sawtooth cutting edge. My experience is that lots of small rocks get stuck in between the tines, and I had to beat them out at least once a day. The sawtooth edge made it hard to get under the rocks to scoop them up, and you got a lot of dirt with the rocks. It you were just picking up 1 rock here or there it might be fine, but I would be filling the bucket with rocks.

I chose to spend more $ and bought a Bradco rock bucket (there are other brands with the same style). It has tines made from round bar and has no cutting edge to scoop up dirt with. You can sometimes get a rock stuck in the tines, but it is rare. You can bend a tine sideways a little at the tip, but you have to be pretty abusive to do that. I have dug out some pretty good side rocks with it and have yet to damage the bucket.
