Good Question.

All you would need if you already have DC is the clutch module $600, the additional cables ($150-250) and the imp switch.

Here is the breakdown of the $1790

Display Cable Kit - DirectCommand $405.00
Switch Box Kit - DirectCommand $535.00
Clutch Control Module Kit $850.00 ($600 clutch module Plus cables)

You could use Direct Command like I did, however life would be a lot easier by using the clutch module.

With the clutch module:
You would not have to rig something to simulate flow.
You would not need an App Rate module to record varieties.
The Insight would know when the row units stopped/started planting for proper recording of acres/variety mapping.
If using only one variety you would not need multi product unlock (when using DC and App Rate module you would need MP unlock)
The clutch module sends power to clutch valves when they are off (not planting) DC sends power to boom valves when they are on.

As far as the air clutch vs the electric clutch, the air clutch might have a slight edge but the electric has been reliable. I would say that the accuracy of the air clutch would be better. The air clutch has 6 stopping points / revolution and the electric has 3.

I hope this helps.
