Most diesel engine fuel systems deal with air in the fuel by returning a small flow of fuel to the tank. The leak off flow from fuel nozzles is usually combined with that at a junction point and then returned to the tank together. If you block the fuel return, and a hose/tube does not blow, the engine will usually shut down because of an air bound fuel pump. Hope this helps.
