Subject: RE: High Plains cover crop in fallow

sw Nebraska
Following. I am in sw NE 18 mi east of Co line. I would love to find an alternative to chem fallow. I have been using residuals like Metribuzin, generic Spartan, Valor etc early spring but it breaks late June right before wheat harvest in July. Then end up with combos of dicamba, D, Sharpen or Gramoxone. I have done the Pea thing with no success and in a dry year it took 10 bushel off the wheat following. I have raised some good millet but it has it's own challenges and still need a wet fall and following spring to keep from hurting my wheat.
The oat thing sounds interesting or March planted winter wheat, something that will give a dense ground cover you could burn off by June 1, I think is key.
