Had a similar event with a 6v53. In my case it was plugged air box drains and very cold weather. Oil and fuel collected in the air boxes and when I went to drive it like a Detroit it pulled all that into the cylinders and did like you are describing. After I cleared the air box drains I never had another problem with the truck.
