A warm M8000 (typical Jeep winch) is rated for 8000 lbs on the first layer and ~4000 lbs on the final wrap.

So cutting the cable shorter would be pretty similar to a snatch block.

Remember that the eyelet on the end of the cable does very little to hold the cable to the drum, you need 5 wraps or so remaining on the drum when the cable is fully extended.
