nkline, Longevity is very important. I have a good market for 8-10 year old pairs. New owners tell me they get another 4 to 7 years from these cows. I agree that a good cow should last longer than 10 years.

I use this to capitalize on value of this age animal. The number of old cull cows I haul to town is very minimal. Also, I have to keep fresher genetics for my bulll buyers and if I'm doing my part my heifers "should" be better than those 8 to 10 year old cows. Not saying it is a perfect system or is for everyone but explaining what and why.


I understand that, I run my own line of black angus genetics as an outcross to the breed, this allows my bull customers to not worry about the angus cows/heifers they are using our bulls on. I don’t compete in the numbers game as I can select to improve animals faster than their numbers can follow. We do finish our own cattle to verify the real world value of our genetics.
