I use books brisket tags in cows. Ocassionally loose one, but not often if they are properly placed. In the past anyway, need to buy them numbered, that last good. Writing on them hasn't lasted.
Also give cow 1 engraved ear tag.

Cow number starts with year born, you might have to use letter.
Calf gets cow number.

We Use Google sheets on phone, for calving book. Set to work off lline. We ended up putting a different column for cow numbers for my son and me, because if one of us wrote something in, then never opened it where we had internet access before the other one wrote a new calf down, we Ocassionally lost some. Don't open it when you have internet service.

If you run your phone through the washing machine, all you loose is toast few entrees at worst.
If you have internet service while using it, that wouldn't be a problem
