The hemi is a pushrod engine. The reason for the new technology, like it or not, is largely from government mandates on emissions and mileage. I agree with you about the engines you mentioned being tried, tested, and proven, but the 60's/70's technology cant meet the demands the manufacturers are facing now. Variable cam timing, direct injection, more sophisticated electronics, and variable displacement are how they're handling it. But you'd think after 100 years of engine building they could make the basics hold up
