Driftless SW Wisconsin
We've had a very dry spring, wet August, no frost yet nor any in the forecast. The grass is still growing amazingly well for this time of year. I'm still trying to rotate my 2 groups through to make maximum use of this green gift, rather than just opening up full pastures, and still leave some for "stockpile" after frost but before we get into deep snow.
Here are a couple pics from opening up some fresh mixed grass/legume today. Also a pic of my favorite bull, a Tested A250 son, and a new fall heifer calf. This lighter colored calf is out of one of my other bulls as I try to manage the amount of Tested genetics in my herd. The Tested calves tend to be darker colored.
I'll add a pic of a couple of my Tested heifers, now bred to my outcross 907 bull. I'm finally getting to the moderate size, good phenotype (for my grass operation) cows.
I'm getting less concerned about a tight calving period as long as a cow maintains a near 365 day calving interval after a slip.
