Really it comes down to a fundamental flaw in the scientific method, or at least the way it is taught. As an introduction to scientific method in middle school it is taught to propose a hypothesis and then conduct experiments or observation to prove or disprove that hypothesis. So the “purpose” of science as taught is focused on discovering facts that support your opinion.
