I've got to think that was someone in the seed business that had to harvest a lot of individual plantings at approximately the same time.  Probably had crews of pickers each assigned to a particular variety that was harvested and bagged separately from everything else.  Even today there are lots of plantings of a tenth of an acre or less of seed in the research stage.
