| Tough decision, BTDT more than once. To me, when I looked in their eyes & could see that they were suffering I knew it was time to do something. You're mind tell tell you when it's that time, sounds like your buddy is there, but you're heart won't want to let go. From the sound of your post I think you're minds telling you it's that time but you're heart is saying no.
Been over 10 yrs since since I had to put my last buddy down. Broke my heart but I knew that the time had come. Had him 17 yrs. I still haven't gotten another dog, don't want to go thru it again.
As others have said, stay by his side, don't let him go through it alone. Technology has changed, first one I had put down I know didn't pass until I was almost home with him. Last one was gone with in a few seconds after the doc gave him his shot. I could feel his muscles real, no suffering or anything, he just passed. When my tomes I wish I could go that way, just drift off adleep.
