There's some novel wood boiler designs that allow you to top-load the firebox. You can dump a tractor bucket of wood in the top, and the fire burns in a downdraft fashion. Because of the downward direction of the heat/air flow, the fire is occurring down at the grate, and the wood on top of it is not burned at all until it's needed.

It might be something to look into if you need to replace an outdoor unit. I've never seen one myself, but it looks like it would eliminate a lot of the hand work of fueling a boiler.
