Sorry for your troubles, but here's what I see of concern (playing Devil's advocate in some of it, just to bring some issues to light):

1. You looked over the dozer for about 30 mins, with 10 mins operating time, and brought it home. That is not much time to determine it was not overheating, presuming it was started for your inspection with a cold engine. You also don't mention what the engine coolant temperature showed at that time. Did you verify the temperature was indeed stabilized, or if it was still increasing? Did you check the hydraulic fluid level of the cooling fan drive system during your inspection? If there is a hydraulic filter in the fan drive system, is there a plugged/bypassing filter indicator light, did it come on during lamp check sequence prior to engine start up? If light did not come on, did you mention that to the seller and investigate further? A non-functional light could have prevented you from finding a plugged/bypassing filter, possibly indicting a hydraulic system failure already in progress. Or maybe there is no plugged filter indicator light, but it has an indicator on the filter to show it is plugged?

2. You indicate it overheats in less than 30 mins just tracking to your job site. but you also mention it can idle all day stationary. Regarding the seller, I would say he would question why you would let an engine run all day once you knew there was an overheating problem. And, how many days/hours did you actually do that, and were you monitoring the coolant temperature the whole time? That would be a long time to either set and watch the temperature gauge to keep going back/forth frequently to monitor it.

3. Your saying it can idle all day, after knowing it overheats in less than 30 mins when just tracking, also will probably draw seller's attention in that you've given the machine many hours of engine operation time (even though it was at idle) once you knew there was a cooling problem. That easily could have been more than enough time for the hydraulic pump to further disintegrate and/or the filter to continue bypassing (not filtering), creating and allowing more debris to go through the cooling fan drive system and contaminate it to damage.

It sucks you have this to deal with. The seller did offer to pay for the water pump, if that was found to be the issue. Since that's not the issue and it's the hydraulic fan drive system, did you ask him to pay for that? These are just rhetorical questions and I wouldn't ask you to answer them here, but just give them some thought. Good luck.
