NE Iowa | That potential situation is repeated often at our elevator. It's on west side of a North-South US Hwy in middle of town - 2 lanes each direction (no median). Scale lays East-West and was placed when a big load coming to town was a 100Hp tractor with 2 gravity boxes, so it's a little too close to the edge of the highway. To get on the scale with a semi pretty much requires turning right from the LH Southbound lane. Always have turn signals on and constantly checking passenger mirror for cars in RH Southbound lane - have only had 1 close call over the years, but my trips across the scale are a very very small percentage of the total. I tell folks they can put on the their gravestone 'But, I had the right of way', but they'll still be 6' under. | |
