niobrara nebraska
good cattle dog will just slowly tail them out to the end. I mean a border collie type cattle dog, not a blue heeler. Dog has to have a little patience and slowly work the cattle out. Our one that will never be replaced with one as good would probably take an hour to move calves out of a 100 acre field. He would just slowly tail them out. If all that is available is a barking heeler type, that is better then nothing because the dog can find and keep up with the calves and let you know there location. As far as maybe catching them in the pen, try a cell phone notification trail camera that will send a pic to your phone when they are there. As far as teaching the son to not forget. Let him follow that dog and cattle around in that field for a couple hours on foot.......Will last a lifetime with him. Not fun at all.
