East of Broken Bow
We raise our own cattle, and used to have a small farrow to finish operation, with sows on dirt.
I can attest, that it if possible, it is better to keep animals healthy, than try to keep up treating sick ones. Often, just changing the ration would help as much as commercial additives like antibiotics. For example if the pigs got scours at weaning, but otherwise looked OK, often grinding in a little oats would be better for them, than trying to give them shots.
My dad and grandpa both believed in being as healthy as you could, and listening to what your body was trying to tell you. Grandpa made it to 95 or 96, and spent less than 2 weeks in a nursing home. Dad is in his 80s, and still going strong.
