Another trick they pull is they eliminate all the participants in the trial that have reactions during the "run in" of the trial. In other words before the trial actually starts, the run in period is used to identify people that may have trouble taking the medicine. They eliminate them from the actual trial. This is how they can tell doctors side effects are in very few people yet doctors and patients see lots of people with side effects. People quit taking it because the side effects are so severe. Yet according to the drug companies, based on their research where they kicked out all the people with side effects, hardly anyone exhibits side effects. Funny how that works.
