Grimes, IA | I live in DSM. As said Fair starts Thursday. by Wednesday night hotel rooms will be at a premium.
(if you haven't been its a really good fair, and I would definitely say it would be on the top of the list)
Bowling is not the greatest. There is a Fishbowl attached to Bass pro in Altoona thats kinda neat.
as said the science center in Downtown is fun. parking, and traffic isn't bad around that area.
the zoo is small. 4 hours, and you'll have seen everything at least once.
If you go to the zoo, there are 2 really good pizza joints close, but don't open till later in the day.
the Ramada on Merhle Hay Rd has a indoor waterpark, that's good for little kids. Its right off the interstate too.
Adventureland is a decent sized amusement park, and is in Altoona as well, but its getting spendy to go there. They also have an attached waterpark.
If you don't mind driving about 30 minutes east of Des Moines, there is a Drive in Theatre in Newton. (pre buy tickets, as it usually sells out, at least on weekends) | |
