What I do is pull the leaf off above the ear, if the stalk is "round" the ear is in the too position. If the stalk is concave you know the ear is set lower. Pull the next leaf up and you can determine if the ear is in #2 or #3 position, etc. Each position lower means ear is about 12-15% smaller. Yield will trend similar.
