Missaukee Mi | Part of our operation consists of 65 milking jerseys plus youngstock and dry cows that are grazed on 100 acres. Year after year we hit a dry spell in June or July and run out of grass. We have started growing a little sorghum sudan grass to help get us through the dry spells and it has consistently helped get us through the slump by needing less rain to get growth and taking off faster when we do get rains. We would like to start planting a few more acres of it and wondered about raising another crop with it as the sudan grass acres sit idle from the first frost in the fall to the first week of June. We have never raised it but it sounds like triticale can give good tonnage and high feed quality. Has anyone used this combination? Would this interfere with getting the sudan grass in on time? Any other alternatives you woulld recommend? | |
