1, 2 or 3" rock works good because it won't wash out under the eaves, it will fill with dust and grow weeds like everybody says. You want a pre emergent to keep the weeds from growing, I don't think that's quite as bad as a soil sterilizer.

I'd be leery of belting, rats would love to dig under it here. They won't try to dig too long in bigger rock.
