Subject: RE: John Deere 960 Cultivator Question

Southern MN in the pothole between the hills
Pass on that wreck. 960's were a good cultivator in moldboard plowing, but are nothing but a dump rake in any kind of residue. The drag that one has will only compound the problem. Residue will get wadded up between the bars and will leave a nice trench until the wad gets spit out. We had a 24' one with the same setup. I'm a Deere guy, but the best bang for your buck in a cultivator as wide as you're looking for, that can actually go through some trash would be an IH 4900. I run an IH 4800, and it's an immense improvement over the old 960. A 980 or a DMI would be better yet, but I get along well with the 4800 for what it is and what I paid for it.
