You go by the level of sludge in the bottom and scum on the top. I've never seen scum on the top of mine, but others seem to build up lots of scum, not sure why? The sludge on the bottom builds up very slowly and predictably and all it does is reduce the working water volume, so the time the water spends in the tank decreases. The scum on the top can run out into the drain field and plug if it gets thick enough. Easy to check the levels on your own. Here an inspection is required ever two or three years, or pumping.


New tanks have a "screen" put in the outlet keeps the floaters in the tank
